Consumers care about animal welfare, and they showed up in a big way to shut down cruelty in HelloFresh’s supply chain. Now, in a historic moment, HelloFresh has released a more detailed and timely animal welfare plan.

A group of white "broiler" chickens, or chickens raised for meat, stand together looking at the camera.

HelloFresh is finally taking meaningful action toward fulfilling its promise to make progress on its Better Chicken Commitment. This is a big win for chickens, and another significant milestone in holding corporations accountable to their animal welfare policies.

Although HelloFresh signed on to the Better Chicken Commitment back in 2019, the company had been showing slow or no progress on meeting most of the components of this set of animal welfare standards. That’s where changemakers like you came in, and made a monumental difference for countless chickens who will no longer be subject to the very worst factory farming practices in HelloFresh’s supply chain.

Sending a message to HelloFresh

From showing up at HelloFresh’s NYC headquarters to hand-delivering more than 46,000 Change.org signatures to flooding HelloFresh’s email, social, and phone lines with strong messages advocating for animal welfare, changemakers like you made an immense difference for chickens.

Animal advocates and consumers sent a strong message to HelloFresh that corporate accountability matters. Making an animal welfare commitment is an important shift for the better, but it’s critical to follow through on that pledge. That includes publicly reporting on progress and sharing a plan for how the company will fulfill its promises. Thanks to your dedication, countless chickens will be spared a lifetime of the very worst cruelty as HelloFresh implements its Better Chicken Commitment (BCC).

Why the Better Chicken Commitment matters

Known in the industry as “broilers,” chickens raised for meat on factory farms live with relentless abuse from their first moments to their last. Their too-short lives are spent in filthy, dark, crowded sheds with too many other chickens, in stress and pain because they’ve been bred for fast growth. Then they’re sent to slaughter, where reports show many chickens are even boiled alive.

These intelligent, sensitive animals deserve far better, which is where the Better Chicken Commitment becomes a significant step. This set of standards helps improve animal welfare by requiring factory farms to provide more housing space and improved environments for chickens, and to ensure chickens are rendered unconscious before slaughter through multi-step controlled atmospheric stunning. It also demands supplier compliance through third-party verification, and holds companies to using only BCC-approved chicken breeds that demonstrate higher welfare outcomes.

While there’s still a long way to go in ending the abuse of animals raised for food, adhering to the Better Chicken Commitment means that chickens in HelloFresh’s supply chain will have increased protection under these standards—and that’s a very big deal.

What else can I do for chickens?

Together, we can remain relentless in our efforts to end the abuse of animals raised for food. This victory sends a strong message to corporations like Sodexo, that are failing to follow through for animals, that the time for change is now. Our momentum is building, and companies are paying attention.
