The Humane League opposes harassment and discrimination in all forms. We are committed to providing a work environment free of sexual (or any form) of unlawful harassment, discrimination, or retaliation.

We're living in a massively important cultural moment. The #MeToo movement has given victims of sexual assault and harassment a prominent stage, creating waves throughout every aspect of our society—and the animal rights movement is no exception. Existing as quiet murmurs for years, the conversation about discrimination and sexual harassment in the community has finally come to the forefront.

At The Humane League, we have taken steps to address this issue as it exists in our society and in the animal rights movement in order to build a safer workplace. We will continue to take proactive measures in the coming months to make sure we are doing what we can to be part of the solution:

  1. We have already instituted regular and mandatory sexual harassment and discrimination training. Managers completed a more extensive training to understand, avoid, and respond to workplace harassment.
  2. All staff participated in a workshop on diversity and inclusion. Plans are in place for additional ongoing training specifically on gender and diversity sensitivity.
  3. We have developed and use a compensation formula based on job responsibility and performance, regardless of gender. We are working with an outside consultant on pay and title equity to ensure we are preventing any discriminatory practices.
  4. We are developing internal protocols to provide women at The Humane League with more opportunities to present on behalf of the organization, giving them public exposure as leaders in the AR movement and ensuring fair representation of The Humane League's staff.
  5. We believe paid parental leave is essential for gender equality and have adopted a progressive parental leave policy, one which goes above and beyond federal standards.
  6. Our Equity and Inclusion committee hosts frequent meetings to discuss issues of discrimination and provides resources to leadership and staff.

In addition to these proactive measures, The Humane League has detailed policies in place to prevent harassment or unlawful discrimination.

The Humane League opposes harassment and discrimination in all forms. We are committed to providing a work environment free of sexual (or any form) of unlawful harassment, discrimination, or retaliation.

Harassment or unlawful discrimination against individuals on the basis of race, color, religion or creed, gender/sex, including pregnancy, sexual orientation, national origin or ancestry, ethnicity, citizenship status, genetic information, military or veteran status, age, and physical or mental disability, or any other classification protected by applicable local, state, or federal laws is illegal and prohibited by The Humane League. Such conduct by or towards any employee, contract worker, intern, volunteer, customer, vendor, board member, or anyone else who does business with The Humane League will not be tolerated.

The Humane League encourages and expects the reporting of all perceived incidents of inappropriate workplace behavior, harassment, or retaliation, regardless of the offender's identity or position. The Humane League prohibits, and no one will be subject to, any form of discipline, reprisal, intimidation, or retaliation for good faith reports or complaints of incidents of harassment of any kind, pursuing any harassment claim, or cooperating in related investigations.

Strong policies are essential, but policies are only effective if they are adopted and embodied in the organization and its culture. The leadership team stands behind our policies and is working to see they are implemented at all levels of our organization. We have an open door to any suggestions for improvements, concerns and complaints. The Humane League is thankful for this conversation in the movement, and we aim to live up to our core value of inclusivity. We will continue to be committed to identifying and addressing issues of inequity.
