The Humane League’s work is driven by a dedicated team of folks united around one mission: to end the abuse of animals raised for food.

Over the years, The Humane League (THL) has grown to take on some of the world’s biggest corporations, and positively impact the lives of millions of animals. Our success stems from the hard work of a community of compassionate Changemakers—including our global team of full-time staff. Take a behind-the-scenes look at what working at The Humane League is like, and see if a career at THL is right for you.

What we do

Our mission is simple, but paramount to everything we do: We exist to end the abuse of animals raised for food. Day-to-day, this means we take on campaigns to end some of the worst abuses that millions of animals face in our food system. We consistently research and implement the most effective strategies to influence private corporations and public policymakers to do better for animals. Our campaigns have gotten major companies to stop supporting cruel, unnatural breeding practices for chickens, eliminate the use of battery cages for egg-laying hens, and end the confinement of mother pigs in gestation crates.

Whether it’s through working with our Corporate Engagement and Policy teams to plan and execute campaigns; coordinating grassroots volunteer efforts with our Organizing team; raising public awareness with our Communications, Development, and Digital Products teams; engaging diverse, global staff with our People teams—every individual at The Humane League helps create a better future for animals.

As we've grown, we've been able to witness the impact of our work in real time. In just the last decade, the US cage-free flock has grown from 11% to a little over 40% of the total US egg-laying flock. That number represents millions of individual hens who have better lives thanks to The Humane League and our partner organizations in the Open Wing Alliance. So, if you care about making a difference for animals, working at THL isn't just effective on a global scale—it's deeply satisfying on an individual level!

Allie Gunter, Sr. Campaigns Manager, shares:

“Working on corporate campaigns with The Humane League is a dream come true. Every day I get the opportunity to work with compassionate individuals to help make meaningful progress for billions of animals. It’s incredibly cool—and I feel very fortunate—to work with people who care so deeply about improving the lives of farm animals and making this world a better place.”

Our core values

While our mission guides all of our work, our core values embody how we achieve that mission. These values inform our culture, and our approach, to ending the abuse of animals raised for food.

  • Effective. We strategically focus our energy, resources and talent toward impactful actions that will reduce, and ultimately end, the abuse of animals raised for food.
  • Collaborative. We are a league of team players who lift each other up, share our knowledge, resources, and passion with others, and find strength in building an impactful and positive movement for all.
  • Relentless. We are an indomitable force—with an unwavering commitment to our mission and endless determination to succeed.
  • Inclusive. We welcome, respect, and empower others, appreciating the value that every individual brings to our organization and our movement.
  • Innovative. We constantly seek opportunities to improve, creating forward-thinking strategies and solutions to grow as a team and a movement.
  • Nimble. We quickly and efficiently embrace whatever change is needed to be most effective in achieving our mission.

Our work for inclusion and belonging

The Humane League is working to build an organization, and a movement, where individuals of myriad identities and diverse lived experiences belong, are valued, and have what they need to thrive. In partnership with external experts from The Melanin Collective, we spent nearly two years assessing how the organization has lived up to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion—and where we needed to do better. Together, we developed a roadmap of what steps we can take to embody justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the organization.

Our staff-led Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee champions the ongoing work of making THL a better place for all. They lead communities of practice that amplify the voices of marginalized groups and provide resources for creating more welcoming and inclusive spaces within the organization. Staff members of different backgrounds can share their unique experiences in their own affinity groups, including the Rainbow Connection for LGBTQIA+ staff, The Ability League for staff who identify with having disabilities, the Multicultural Matrix for staff who identify as BIPOC (Black Indigenous, and People of Color) and people of the global majority, THLders for staff 40 and over, and the Parent/Caregiver Group.

We’re still learning, and we still have work to do—but we’re all-in on our commitment to making our organization a place where everyone can thrive. We hope you will find a place to thrive with us.

Life at The Humane League

At The Humane League, one of our top goals is to be a great place to work. We pride ourselves on our organizational culture, which fosters connection, collaboration, and growth among all of our staff. We offer several benefits that support our staff’s well-being and work-life balance.

Remote work

Since we started, The Humane League has always been a 100% remote organization—we don't even have an office! Our staff is spread out all over the US and beyond, with a sister organization in the United Kingdom.

Each employee receives the tools that they need to create a positive work environment wherever they’re located, including a THL-issued MacBook; access productivity tools like Slack, Asana, and Google Drive; and the ability to request additional resources like ergonomic seating and external monitors. We also provide a flexible schedule for people living on the West Coast, East Coast, and anywhere in between, making it so no one has to work outside 9 AM–5 PM in their respective time zone.

Staying connected

Remote work can be a big adjustment from working in an office or other in-person job. Even though there’s no water cooler for us to gather around, The Humane League still provides opportunities to stay connected and build community with your fellow staff—in fact, many of our work connections have turned into lifelong friendships!

These opportunities to connect are organized by THL’s Culture Committee, a group of staff who’ve volunteered to make THL a better, more connected, more fun place to work. This committee has come up with so many creative ways to spend virtual time together—they’ve coordinated weekly game and chat times, a virtual escape room competition, led us through arts and crafts sessions, and even sent out vegan cookie kits for us to decorate over the holidays!

And, while we love to spend time together virtually, we also look forward to connecting in-person at our annual team retreats. Every year, team members from all over the world get together for a special week of team-building, strategic planning, and, of course, fun activities like field trips to animal sanctuaries and karaoke nights!

Benefits of working at THL (US)

At The Humane League, we take a holistic approach to benefits—in addition to a competitive salary and a 401(k) matching plan, we offer a variety of tools and resources to support each staff member’s overall well-being.

Unlimited paid time off & flexible schedules

When you’re doing the life-saving work of ending the abuse of animals raised for food, it’s important to take time for yourself to rest and recharge. That’s why we’ve consistently offered unlimited vacation time for all of our staff, and a paid one-month sabbatical for staff who have been with us for five years.

Health & wellness

We’ve designed our health and wellness benefits to support our employees and their families at every age and stage. Here’s some of what we offer:

  • Full healthcare coverage, including 100% paid Vision and Dental.
  • Progressive parental leave, providing ample time for you to take care of your growing family. After one year of employment, full-time staff can take up to 28 weeks of leave after the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a new family member, and The Humane League will compensate up to 16 weeks of parental leave at 100% of the employee’s regular, straight weekly pay.
  • Paid sick leave, so you don’t have to worry about taking time to care for yourself or your family.
  • Three free sessions of confidential online therapy per month, allowing you to choose the right therapist for you.
  • Veterinary discount plans for your companion animals, since they need healthcare, too!

Career development

We want everyone to have the opportunity to grow and advance in their career. That’s why we offer an Individual Development Plan (IDP) stipend to fund continuing education and help you reach your goals. The Humane League can direct you to a variety of professional development resources for you to take advantage of, including courses and certifications on leadership skills; project management; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and more.
