For people, October 2nd is just another day of the year. For farmed animals, it memorializes their life of suffering.

Life on a factory farm promises nothing but a short life, full of unimaginable suffering for farmed animals all around the world. In a single year, an estimated 130 billion animals are subject to overcrowded cages, deprived of sunlight and room to roam. They are drugged, abused, and brutally slaughtered—only to end up wrapped in plastic at your local grocery store. The life of a farmed factory animal—be it a pig, a cow, a turkey, a chicken—is simply no life at all. That’s why on this World Farm Animals Day, we’re calling on you to join us in standing up for the animals.

The history of World Farm Animals Day

Mahatma Gandhi was a celebrated Indian lawyer known for his peaceful activism and his belief that mankind should treat all living beings with respect. Each year on October 2nd, the birthdate of Gandhi, we celebrate World Farm Animals Day to carry out his message of respect and non-violence for notoriously mistreated animals.

Since 1983, World Farm Animals Day has existed to memorialize the unfathomable number of lives lost, take action against these inhumane farming practices, and promote a vegan lifestyle. To raise awareness for the cause, activists around the world are participating in a number of ways, including passing out leaflets, hosting vigils, and participating in city marches, protests, and meetups.

How The Humane League celebrates farm animals

Chickens, pigs, and cows are often kept in cages and pens too tightly packed for them to turn around or lay down. They are pumped with antibiotics to fight off disease caused by their unsanitary living conditions. They are bred to grow larger and faster than they naturally would, leading to painful injuries and loss of mobility.

These aren’t isolated incidents. With an estimated 94% of all meat, dairy, and egg products coming from factory farms and roughly 130 billion animals slaughtered in factory farms around the world every year, the average dinner plate is a manifestation of this cruelty.

At The Humane League, we are relentlessly working to end the abuse of animals raised for food. By putting pressure on corporations around the world to commit to more humane standards for these animals, and by implementing high-level policy change, we are driving the fight for meaningful action.

This World Farm Animals Day, you can count on The Humane League to fight for better living standards for the animals all around the world.

How you can make a difference for the animals

Each year, more animals are killed for food in factory farms than for any other reason—more than hunting, experimentation, and in animal shelters combined. We believe in giving a voice to this victimized group of beings—but we can’t do it alone. That’s why this World Farm Animals Day, we’re calling upon compassionate activists like you to help be the change for the countless animals that live tortured lives on these factory farms.

Donate today to turn your compassion into action. Your gift can help end this needless abuse, and it will mean all the difference for the life of an innocent animal. Every penny counts.

In honor of World Farm Animals Day, thank you for taking a stand, together, for the animals!
