Volunteer Terms

  • Your role is a Volunteer Changemaker with The Humane League (“THL”). Because this is a volunteer role, you may discontinue your participation at any time for any reason, and THL may discontinue this position for any reason not prohibited by law.
  • You agree to demonstrate honesty, punctuality, courtesy, a cooperative attitude, and a willingness to learn. You agree to obey the policies, rules, and regulations of THL and comply with THL’s business practices and procedures within these terms and the Changemaker Principles.
  • You understand that as a volunteer, THL will not provide you with financial or other assistance, including, but not limited to, medical, health, or disability benefits or insurance.
  • By signing up for the Changemaker Community Center, you understand and agree that you assume all the risks of participating as a volunteer in THL’s Changemaker Network. By signing up as a THL volunteer, you agree to hold harmless and release THL and any affiliated individuals or entities from any legal causes of action that may arise due to your participation in the program. Additionally, as a THL volunteer, you agree to indemnify and hold THL and any affiliated individuals or entities from any liability or loss arising from your volunteer relationship with THL.

Photography

  • By signing up for the Changemaker Community Center, you irrevocably grant THL permission to use Photos that you capture in the course of your role with THL in any or all of its publications, including websites and campaign materials. You authorize use of these images without compensation to, or approval from, you; you further authorize THL to edit the photos.

Confidentiality

  • During your term, you may come across confidential information. Confidential information should never be shared with any unauthorized individual. Confidential information is that which is shared with or otherwise accessible to volunteers, whether written, digital, or oral, that is not generally available to others. This includes information related to: THL campaigns, strategies, and tactics Partnerships and coalitions Donors and financial information Research Personnel information
  • All personally identifiable information about THL’s volunteers, fellows, employees, supporters, and donors, including, but not limited to, names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses, is confidential and should not be disclosed. Saving and storing this information on your personal devices is strictly prohibited.
  • At the conclusion of your volunteer role with THL, you must return all organization-owned property, equipment, and documents, including electronic mail or other information.
  • You understand and agree that THL will own any intellectual property that you create in your role with THL.

Political Campaigns

  • As a tax-exempt organization, THL may not participate in political campaigns, though THL respects volunteers’ rights to attend political events, support and oppose candidates, donate to political campaigns, and participate in any other political activities. In order to ensure that volunteers’ political activities are not reflected as those of THL, volunteers should refrain from wearing any THL-branded clothing or accessories and refrain from outwardly representing THL (including using a [name]@changemaker.thehumaneleague.org email address) in any political context (political candidate fundraisers, rallies or events, volunteering activities, voting/polling places, legislative activities that aren’t related to an official campaign with The Humane League, etc.).

Social Media Policy

  • Volunteers should use a disclaimer stating, “The views and opinions I express here are my own.” When referencing THL on social media, Volunteers should identify themselves as a Volunteer Changemaker or Volunteer Changemaker Captain and not misrepresent that they are an employee of THL.

Media Policy

  • Volunteers should not interact with the media on behalf of THL without permission from THL. When media coverage is expected, they should work with their Field Organizer and THL’s PR team to ensure they are trained.

Donations

Safer Spaces, Discrimination, and Harassment

  • THL strives to create an atmosphere that is safe and comfortable for all. When participating in the Volunteer Changemaker program and working with THL, volunteers should refrain from inappropriate behavior, including, but not limited to, all forms of harassment and discrimination and behavior that is racist, sizes, sexist, transphobic, queerphobic, ableist, xenophobic, ageist, or homophobic.
  • Additionally, THL is committed to providing a volunteer environment free from any form of unlawful discrimination, harassment, or retaliation. Unlawful discrimination or harassment against individuals on the basis of race, color, religion or creed, gender/sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding and/or related medical conditions), gender identity, gender expression, marital status, sexual orientation, national origin or ancestry, ethnicity, citizenship status, genetic information, military or veteran status, age, physical or mental disability, or any other classification protected by applicable local, state, or federal laws is illegal and prohibited by The Humane League.
