Coffee giant hits major milestone, eliminating cages for hens in five countries and reaching 90% cage-free worldwide.

In a significant victory for transparency and animal protection, Caffè Nero has published impressive progress in its commitment to eliminate cage-free eggs from its global supply chain.

For the hens themselves, this means freedom from extreme confinement—where they can't even spread their wings, or engage in their most basic normal behaviors. The international coffeehouse chain now sources 90% of its eggs from cage-free systems worldwide, marking a substantial increase from 80% last year.

The company's country-by-country breakdown reveals complete success in several markets, with the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Poland, and notably the United Arab Emirates all reaching 100% cage-free sourcing. Significant strides have also been made in the US market, which has jumped from 60% to 90%, while Cyprus has also achieved 90% cage-free sourcing. Croatia, Oman, and Turkey are reporting 50% progress as well.

This progress is particularly noteworthy in regions where cage-free commitments are less common, such as the UAE, demonstrating how international companies can successfully implement animal welfare improvements across global markets. Caffè Nero is committed to achieving 100% cage-free implementation by 2026.

This level of transparent reporting and consistent progress reflects growing public demand for corporate accountability in animal welfare. When companies openly share their journeys toward eliminating cruel confinement systems, it sets an important example for the entire food service industry, and shows how public engagement can drive meaningful change for animals.
