On a recent episode of the Superpowers for Good show, host Devin Thorpe sits down with Dan Shannon, the CEO of The Humane League, to discuss a massive crisis hiding in plain sight.

At any given moment, roughly 30 to 35 billion animals live trapped inside the industrial factory farming system. During their conversation, Dan and Devin pull back the curtain on how heavily consolidated agricultural conglomerates treat living, feeling individuals as mere products to be bought and sold.

As Dan and Devin discuss, most people share a core belief that animals deserve kindness and protection from unnecessary suffering. Whether we share our homes with companion animals or simply believe in basic decency, nobody likes it when massive companies hide the truth. Yet, today's industrial food system is intentionally designed to keep consumers in the dark.

The reality behind the marketing tricks

Agribusiness conglomerates spend massive marketing dollars to paint a false, pastoral picture of green fields and flowing pastures. They know that 80% of Americans disapprove of factory farming practices, so they rely on clever “humane washing” tactics to protect their profits.

Dan explains that labels like “all-natural” or “farm-fresh” are completely unregulated terms designed purely for marketing. These deceptive descriptions prey on your genuine desire to support compassionate practices. Even worse, corporations use these labels to artificially inflate grocery store prices, charging consumers steep markups that go straight into corporate pockets rather than toward improving the lives of animals. You have a fundamental right to know the truth about how food is made, and these companies are fully culpable for hiding the exploitation inherent in their supply chains.

Breaking down barriers through common ground

Connecting with others about the harsh realities of factory farming can feel daunting, but the episode highlights a powerful path forward. By connecting with people’s inherent empathy and focusing on common ground, all of us can break down even the toughest of barriers.

Dan shares a story from earlier in his career when a confrontational shock-jock radio show invites him on with the sole intention of mocking his animal advocacy. Instead of writing the host off or getting defensive, Dan engages with humor and sticks firmly to shared values, reminding the audience that the same decency we show to a dog or cat belongs to every animal. Weeks later, that same host reached out for Dan’s help with a local animal cruelty case. That initial bridge transformed Dan into a trusted guest, opening the door to share a message of compassion with millions of listeners.

Your choices drive the collective momentum

The movement to dismantle factory farming relies completely on citizen power, making everyday supporters the true heroes of this fight. While personal dietary shifts make an impact, your collective voice as a consumer, voter, and citizen is what forces multi-billion-dollar corporations to change.
