April was a tough month for Food Lion executives—and though the month is over, they’re in for a long ride.

Two new billboards popped up near Food Lion’s Salisbury, NC headquarters, making viewers do a double-take.

But they’re not an advertisement for the grocery retailer—at least, not positive ones: they call upon the company to honor its promise to spare egg-laying hens in its supply chain from cruel cages. One shows Food Lion’s “Here for every moment” has been turned into “Caged for every moment”—and the text sits atop the website FoodLyin.com. These billboards confront the ugly truth that Ahold Delhaize executives would rather cling to greed than take simple steps to reduce suffering for hens.

Another brings attention to how Food Lion’s parent company claims it “[wants] each animal in our brands’ supply chains to live in an environment that has adequate space for free movement.” The billboard reads, “Free movement? I cannot even spread my wings,” and includes a link to the website FoodLyin.com. Both show a caged hen on the right half of the billboard.

These are not the first billboard in Salisbury that target Food Lion, and they’re far from the lastto call upon the company to do better for the suffering animals it pledged to protect.

Until Food Lion and its parent company Ahold Delhaize (and its subsidiaries Stop & Shop, Giant Food, and The Giant Company) follow though on their promises to go 100% cage-free by 2025, upset customers will continue to follow through on their plans to protect animals from one of the worst factory farming abuses.
