In honor of Valentine’s Day—and countless suffering factory-farmed animals—animal lovers told Ahold Delhaize to stop breaking their hearts.

Ahold Delhaize—the parent company of popular grocery stores Food Lion, Stop & Shop, The Giant Company, and Giant Food—hasn’t been showing love to the suffering animals in its egg supply chain.

The large grocery retailer made a cage-free commitment almost a decade ago, but it failed to show any sign of progress on its pledge. (It has, however, come up with flimsy excuses.)

In response to its inaction, consumers mobilized to send dozens of Valentine's Day messages to the headquarters of Food Lion, Stop & Shop, Giant Food, and The Giant Company. The messages urged Ahold executives to stop being heartless, and to go cage-free.

Stop & Shop President Roger Wheeler and Food Lion SVP of Fresh Category, Merchandising and Pricing, Karen Fernald really felt the love, with flowers sent to their headquarters bearing an encouraging message: They could “win customers’ hearts” by making progress on their animal welfare policy.
