Animal Policy Alliance (APA) member group representatives sat down with Our Hen House podcast hosts to share their expertise.

Conor Lamkin (Assistant Policy Counsel, The Humane League), Max Broad (Founder and Executive Director, DC Voters for Animals) and Kara Holmquist (Director of Advocacy, Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) talked about the APA’s effective work on fur ban legislation.

This is the second episode of Our Hen House’s Animal Policy Alliance Podcast Series—featuring “testimonials and lessons learned from passionate animal activists working to enact meaningful change for animals and end large-scale animal cruelty through legislation and policy reform.” (The first episode, featuring THL’s Senior Policy Counsel Hannah Truxell, was covered here.)

The podcast had plenty of insights and inspiration for listeners, including the importance of local grassroots advocacy and coalition-building leading to large-scale change, creativity and resource-sharing in fur ban campaigns, and why this the perfect time for animal advocates to get involved in the fight for animals raised for fur, as they have momentum on their side against a declining industry.

For listeners hoping to make progress for animals, Lamkin emphasized that every action counts: “You never know what one flyer or fact sheet can do for someone in the public who gets it… if you're doing outreach to an individual person, that can spark a new advocate in our movement who then wants to create policy change themselves.”

And though single-issue campaigns like fur bans may seem niche to some, animal advocates know they’re critical steps toward the bigger picture they’re all fighting for—a kinder world for all animals. Said Lamkin: “So while it may seem like just one small issue, it's such a building block to really build up the framework of the legal system and the jurisdiction. And to build up what you can build upon for more and future animal protection measures that are a lot more impactful… you never know what advocate you're gonna spark to join our movement, and make real meaningful change.”
