Promising news for caged egg-laying hens.

In 2016, leading retailer REWE Group made a promise to end the use of cruel cages in its global egg supply chain by 2025.
But since making its global cage-free egg commitment, REWE Group remained silent on its progress—until now. REWE Group finally reported that as of March 2025, the company is 83% cage-free globally, and also reaffirmed its 2025 100% cage-free goal for all its countries of operation.
This is a significant step forward for factory-farmed animals. In cages, egg-laying hens are forced to live out their lives in spaces so small that they preclude basic movement, causing severe physical and mental distress.
REWE Group—estimated to use over 2.1 billion eggs a year—stands to spare over 7.5 million hens from cages annually, once it reaches 100% cage-free fulfillment by December 2025. By doing so, REWE Group would join other global giants in successfully honoring their animal welfare commitments.
