What is the company culture like?
At THL we deeply value everyone who works with us. We’re committed to fostering a workplace where everybody feels empowered to thrive in their role. We set ambitious goals that have the greatest strategic impact for animals, then channel our energy, resources, and talents into actions that will reduce—and ultimately end—the abuse of animals raised for food. We’re deeply dedicated to our mission and work collaboratively to drive meaningful change.
Our workplace culture is globally inclusive. We work actively to overcome barriers—time zones, distances, languages, cultural assumptions—so that everyone, worldwide, feels connected and has equal opportunities to thrive and advance.
To achieve this, all team members commit to demonstrating three core behaviors daily:
- Growth Mindset: We actively seek feedback, learn from every collaboration, and adapt our work style and processes (like meeting times) so that everyone has access and opportunities to contribute.
- Communication: We proactively assess the global impact of our decisions and actions, deliberately seeking out, listening to, and integrating diverse perspectives, so that outcomes are fair and equitable.
- Genuine Care: We’re committed to being clear in our communications, to understanding the diverse cultural and organizational context of our global teams, and to using accessible language in all our forums so that everyone is aligned.
While we don’t expect perfection, we also don’t settle for “good enough.“
We embrace change, seek opportunities to innovate, and take calculated risks that deliver impactful results for animals.
Is The Humane League (THL) an animal welfare or animal rights organization?
The Humane League is an animal protection organization whose mission is to end the abuse of animals used for food. We hold companies accountable and work to eliminate the worst abuses in their supply chains. We know big social change is a journey of small yet meaningful incremental steps. That’s why we influence and campaign for this change little by little, company by company, so that we can build a world where animals are no longer raised and abused for food.
What does it mean to work for THL?
At The Humane League, you’ll be joining a team of changemakers who are sparing millions of animals from the worst forms of confinement and suffering while also weakening the industries that abuse them. You'll support corporate campaigns and work to change policies that transform our food system at an institutional level.
We work hard every day to improve the treatment of animals on factory farms—and to eventually end the abuse of all animals raised for food everywhere.
What if I need accommodations for the application process or while I’m in the position?
The Humane League is committed to working with and providing reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities. We trust individuals to self-identify and ask for the accommodations they need. An example of an accommodation might be extra time to complete a work simulation exercise, among many others. If you need reasonable accommodations for a disability or learning difference during any part of the employment process, please email accommodations@thehumaneleague.org to make us aware of your request and provide your contact information.
What kind of support and training is available for new hires?
All staff members attend a Welcome Orientation on their first day. It’s a great chance to learn about THL benefits and PTO policies, familiarize themselves with our tech platforms, and begin work on an introductory project that will take them through their first 90 days. During that time, new hires attend interdepartmental orientations and learn more about THL—our history, our core values and culture initiatives, our campaign strategies, and our global impact.
THL’s three core behaviors—Growth Mindset, Communication, and Genuine Care—are integrated into all onboarding sessions. Additionally, all new team members take Cultural Awareness Training, to foster effective, empathetic cross-cultural collaboration. Through our Buddy Program, every new hire is matched with a veteran colleague from a different department. This program was recently expanded to pair people from different cultures, to foster cross-cultural connection and support from Day 1.
Every new staff member also receives personalized training, tailored to help them gain confidence and knowledge in their new role.
What professional development resources are available for employees?
We want all THL employees to reach their full potential. To that end, THL offers an annual $1,000 stipend for professional development, which staff members can use to attend conferences, access webinars, take online training courses, and more. THL also supports staff members who work to attain applicable professional development qualifications, and funds professional subscriptions that are required.
Managers are encouraged to discuss career-development opportunities with their team on an ongoing basis.
How is THL integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into its work?
Being inclusive is one of our core values, and we aim to build an organization and movement where individuals of diverse identities and lived experiences belong, are valued, and have what they need to thrive. Everyone brings value to this movement and our organization, and we welcome everyone regardless of where they are on their journey to end the abuse of animals raised for food. By considering the diversity of our employees through our policies, processes, and programs, we stay focused on supporting those who are helping further our mission every day.
Do I need previous experience in the animal protection space?
No, while previous experience in the animal protection space can be helpful, it’s not a necessity to work here. If you believe in our mission, we would welcome your application!
What do I do if I’m having issues accessing the application or having other technical difficulties with applying?

THL is a global team. What level of English proficiency does a role with us require?
To ensure that our international team can collaborate as seamlessly as possible, we require everyone to have at least an intermediate-level proficiency in English. THL defines an intermediate-level English speaker as someone who has “the ability to handle most situations that are likely to arise, as well as the ability to interact with native speakers with a degree of fluency that makes interaction possible.”
We proudly support our multilingual workforce by providing a robust suite of translation technologies: real-time caption translations in Google Meet, instant-message translations in Slack, whole-document translations in Google Workspace, and other tools THL staff members need to break down language barriers and thrive in their role.
