Start Your Plant-Based Journey

There’s no one way to go plant-based. The right way is what’s right for you…

Your journey begins with a lesson in kindness—to yourself. This is about progress, not perfection. Mix in a little bit of know-how and a little bit of patience, and you’re ready to start your journey. Welcome to the new “you”!

    What to expect

Making any change to your diet can feel like a big deal—but it gets easier (and easier) with familiarity. You’ll quickly learn to adapt your old favorites, and along the way, you’ll discover a whole new world of cuisine to explore. Not every new taste experience will be your cup of tea, but keep trying. You’ll find what works for you!

    One step at a time

Try to avoid an all-or-nothing mindset. Sudden, ambitious shifts may work for some, but for many of us they tend to end in disappointment. A gradual transition is more likely to keep you happy and steady on your path.

    Start with familiar favorites

A great way to begin your transition is to start with veganizing your familiar favorites. Begin with making small and easy substitutions, and take the time you need to graduate to newer foods. Embrace convenience foods such as pasta with a jar of sauce or chili over rice. For a familiar experience, just add store-bought vegan sausage to the pasta or a crumbled veggie burger into the chili.

    Find balance

Calibrate your expectations. Plant-based foods can be healthful, but don’t expect miracles. To make this stick, follow the tips on good health, while also allowing yourself the flexibility to occasionally indulge in treats that might be less healthy.

    Find a veg mentor

You might not know anyone making the same shift as you. That doesn’t mean you have to go it alone! Some local and national animal organizations will match you with a vegan mentor who, besides assisting you in navigating through grocery stores and restaurant menus, can also extend you some moral support when you need it.

    Don’t sweat the small stuff

The biggest impact you’ll have—on your health, animals, people, and the planet—comes from shifting away from the biggest, most harmful ingredients such as meat, fish, dairy, and eggs. It’s entirely your choice whether to concern yourself with non-vegan additives and trace ingredients. Some vegans do, but many don’t. If not for the demand for meat, dairy and eggs, the food industry would have no reason to find markets for those pesky byproducts.

    Go easy on yourself

You’re doing something great. But if you slip up, relax. We’ve all been there! Whether it was an accident or a momentary lapse—remember, every meal is a choice. The positive impact you can make tomorrow isn’t diminished by what might have happened today. Look forward. Think of the good you’re doing, not how perfect you can be.
