Frequently Asked Questions

What is the company culture like?

At THL, we deeply value our employees and are committed to fostering a workplace where everyone feels empowered to thrive in their roles and teams. We set ambitious goals with the greatest strategic impact for animals, channeling our energy, resources, and talent toward actions that will reduce, and ultimately end, the abuse of animals for food. We remain laser-focused on our mission, working collaboratively with colleagues and coalition partners to drive meaningful change. While we don’t expect perfection, we also don’t settle for ‘good enough.’ We embrace change, continuously seek opportunities to innovate, and take calculated risks that deliver impactful results for animals.

Is The Humane League (THL) an animal welfare or animal rights organization?

The Humane League is an animal protection organization whose mission is to end the abuse of animals used for food. We hold companies accountable and work to eliminate the worst abuses in their supply chains. We know big social change is a journey of small yet meaningful incremental steps. That’s why we influence and campaign for this change little by little, company by company, so that we can build a world where animals are no longer raised and abused for food.

What does it mean to work for THL?

At The Humane League, you’ll be joining a team of relentless changemakers who are sparing millions of animals from the worst forms of suffering right now, while also weakening animal-abusing industries in the long run. At THL, you'll support heavy-hitting corporate campaigns and policy changes that are transforming our food system at an institutional level. We're raising the bar for how animals are treated on factory farms—until, one day, we end the abuse of all animals raised for food.

What if I need accommodations for the application process or while I’m in the position?

The Humane League is committed to working with and providing reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities. We trust individuals to self-identify and ask for the accommodations they need. An example of an accommodation might be extra time to complete a work simulation exercise, among many others. If you need reasonable accommodations for a disability or learning difference during any part of the employment process, please email accommodations@thehumaneleague.org to make us aware of your request and provide your contact information.

What kind of support and training is available for new hires?

All new employees attend a Welcome Orientation on their first day with THL where they learn more about our benefits and PTO policies, gain familiarity with our tech platforms, and receive an introductory project that takes them through their first 90 days with THL. Throughout those 90 days, all new hires attend interdepartmental orientations where they learn the history of THL, our campaign strategies, our core values and culture initiatives, the impact of our global teams, and more! Additionally, every new hire is matched with a veteran colleague from a different department through our buddy program, and new staff receive tailored personalized training to help them gain confidence and knowledge in their roles.

What professional development resources are available for employees?

We want all THL employees to grow toward their full potential and are excited to offer all full-time employees an annual $500 stipend for professional development opportunities. This can look like completing online trainings such as the ones linked here, attending a professional development conference, and more. In addition, managers are encouraged to discuss relevant training opportunities and career progression with their direct reports, and employees can schedule one-on-one meetings with our Training Specialist.

How is THL integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into its work? Being inclusive is one of our core values, and we aim to build an organization and movement where individuals of diverse identities and lived experiences belong, are valued, and have what they need to thrive. Everyone brings value to this movement and our organization, and we welcome everyone regardless of where they are on their journey to end the abuse of animals raised for food. By considering the diversity of our employees through our policies, processes, and programs, we stay focused on supporting those who are helping further our mission every day.

Do I need previous experience in the animal protection space? No, while previous experience in the animal protection space can be helpful, it’s not a necessity to work here. If you believe in our mission, we would welcome your application!

“One thing I love about The Humane League is our dedication to constant learning. We share feedback, reflect on lessons learned, and look for opportunities to improve—on everything from our campaign tactics to our organizational culture.”

Our work is grounded in our values

They are our guiding force and inform our culture, and our approach, to ending the abuse of animals raised for food.

We put animals at the heart of everything we do

We are stewards of our limited resources, and our responsibility is to leverage them effectively to end the abuse of animals raised for food. Therefore, our resources (finances, time, staff roles) will always be allocated to help animals, rather than other important causes.

We expect to win, and we make it happen against all odds

The risk of achieving less than we’re capable of should be greater than our fear of failure. Therefore, we set ambitious goals that will have the greatest strategic impact for animals, and we will do everything we can to win. When we win, we rest, reflect, and do it again.

We never stop leveling up for the animals

With trillions of animals trapped in our food system and our own limited resources, we all improve our interventions, our operations and systems, and our individual contributions to our mission. Therefore, while we don’t expect perfection, we also won’t settle for ‘good enough’—we embrace change.

We radically prioritize—we know who we are, and we say no

We are laser-focused on ending the abuse of animals raised for food, thoughtfully collaborating with our colleagues and coalition partners. Therefore, we take educated risks, we embrace what’s strategically needed most in the moment, and we know when to let go and when to lean in—we accept saying and hearing ‘no.’

We’re a global force for animals

We understand our role as part of the global effort to dismantle factory farming everywhere, focusing our efforts strategically on key regions that will together, and over time, have the greatest influence for farmed animals. Therefore, our responsibility as a leader in this movement is to cultivate a powerful, united force for animals that respects and empowers our colleagues and partner organizations to do their best work.

Our commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion

At The Humane League, we believe that everyone should be able to come to work as their true self and experience trust, respect, and a deep sense of belonging. Our efforts focus on empowering our team members to create the changes they want to see—because our culture is something we collectively shape. And the more fully we uplift each other, the more effectively we show up for the animals.
