Global retail giant responds to consumer demand for transparency

REWE Group, one of the world's largest retailers, publicly announces significant progress toward its commitment to sourcing 100% cage-free eggs globally. Following public pressure from consumers and advocacy efforts by the Open Wing Alliance (OWA), REWE Group has released a global cage-free progress report, encompassing its transition across all brands and countries where it operates.
This announcement comes 11 days after the launch of OWA’s Bad Eggs campaign, which called out REWE Group for failing to provide transparency on its cage-free pledge. While REWE Group had previously confirmed 100% cage-free sourcing in Austria and Germany, the company had not shared updates on its progress across its extensive network of 15,700 retail locations and hospitality brands worldwide.
“REWE Group’s commitment to transparency is a significant step forward in corporate accountability,” said Brooke Fane, Sr. Global Corporate Campaigns Specialist at the Open Wing Alliance. “Consumers, investors, and industry leaders have made it clear that companies must follow through on their promises to eliminate cages from their supply chains. By reporting its progress, REWE Group is demonstrating a commitment to responsible sourcing and aligning with industry standards.”
REWE Group’s decision to publicly disclose its global cage-free egg progress places it alongside major industry peers like Aldi Nord, which have embraced full transparency in their global operations. This milestone reflects the growing momentum in the food industry as companies phase out cages in response to consumer expectations and regulatory changes.
The Open Wing Alliance has helped secure more than 2,620 cage-free commitments from corporations worldwide, with over 175 companies pledging to transition their entire global supply chains.
