Projections exposed Stop & Shop executives’ failure to act on animal welfare promises, turning store walls into a billboard for change.

In a bold display of public accountability, activists transformed the walls of a Connecticut Stop & Shop into a canvas for change this February. As night fell, stark messages illuminated the truth behind the company's unfulfilled promises to hens.

Projected messages called out executives from Stop & Shop and its parent company, Ahold Delhaize, including Stop & Shop President Roger Wheeler, Executive Vice President Lee Nicholson, and Ahold Delhaize VP Christy Phillips-Brown. The message was clear: “STOP SUPPORTING ANIMAL CRUELTY.”

Nearly a decade ago, Stop & Shop promised to eliminate battery cages from its supply chain—systems that confine egg-laying hens to spaces smaller than a sheet of paper, preventing them from spreading their wings, dustbathing, or performing other natural behaviors. By transitioning to cage-free systems, millions of hens would no longer face the extreme confinement of battery cages. Yet despite this commitment, the company continues to delay implementation, keeping hens in these restrictive conditions.

While Stop & Shop has the power to eliminate these confinement systems from its supply chain, they continue to avoid accountability. Each day of delay means another day that hens remain confined in battery cages, treated as mere units of production rather than the living, feeling beings they are.
